Book Worms Unite!
As we’re a bunch of book worms, we thought what better way to share our love of literary knowledge than to set up our very own Nelson Bostock Group book club.
Last week we headed to one of our favourite local pubs and had our first monthly meeting, to discuss The Tiger’s Wife by Tea Obreht.
Set on a backdrop of barren Balkan land, war, and death, the novel follows the main character Natalia, as she looks back on life with her grandfather after she finds out he’s died, under suspicious circumstances. It deals with coming to terms with endings — both of Natalia’s grandfather’s life and of Pokies the unity of her native country.
Tackling magical realism, The Tiger’s Wife had core themes of family, myth, death and war dotted throughout. All of us had differing opinions of the book and we soon learnt that it’s not a bad thing for folks to disagree on whether they like a novel; it certainly made for a more spirited conversation!
We ended up giving The Tiger’s Wife quite a low 6 out of 10; however, with mixed opinions and differing views it was a great book to start on. We can’t wait to get stuck into next month’s book – Gone Girl. What are you reading?
