Fever goes back to 1994
Believe it or not, it was 20 years ago this month that the original PlayStation® was born and since then we’ve seen four generations of consoles launch, along with a never-ending list of incredible games. The nostalgia the original PlayStation creates for gamers is truly something special, from the iconic ‘Startup’ sound to the old memory cards, the tangled controller leads, tuning the console into your TV, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Fighting Force, Metal Gear Solid…the list goes on!
To help celebrate two decades of PlayStation, the Fever team took a trip down memory lane last week, opening the #PlayStation94shop in Bethnal Green. The surprise pop-up shop was faithfully recreated in the style of an independent videogame store from the 90s, decked out with iconic PlayStation memorabilia from throughout its 20 year history, including the original PocketStation and imported Japanese games.
If that wasn’t enough, in a secret twist revealed in a series of cryptic clues released on the PlayStation UK social channels the night before, 94 gamers were given the chance to purchase one of the exclusive PlayStation®4 20th Anniversary Edition consoles unveiled by Sony the week before for a special one-day price of just £19.94! Fans went crazy for the once-in-a-lifetime offer, queuing overnight for the chance to get their hands on one of the consoles and step back in time through PlayStation’s history. Celeb fan Jonathan Ross was on hand to open the doors to fans and said he found reliving the past twenty years of PlayStation “more than a little emotional.”
With blanket coverage secured across the nationals, including The Independent, Daily Star, Daily Mirror, Metro and the Daily Express, and fans expressing their delight on Twitter, the campaign was a huge success and a great way to celebrate a landmark milestone in PlayStation history.
