What’s Hot – 17/02/23

Hello avid followers of What’s Hot (or should I say, Hi Mum), hope you had a lovely Valentines, Galentines, Palentines or the like this week. This week we’re talking Superbowl baby reveals, S Club 7 and LGTQIA+ at the Tower, all the best bits. Enjoy!

Rihanna and the Superbowl

Where do we even begin? Rihanna performed live for the first time in 7 years and we love every second of it. Riri also took the opportunity to make the greatest pregnancy reveal of time, announcing her second pregnancy with partner A$AP Rocky during the performance.

Rihanna performed a selection of her greatest hits such as We Found Love and Only Girl In The World, as she wore a red Loewe catsuit. We must give a huge kudos to the hundreds of dancers that surrounded Riri as they were perfectly in unison.

Ahead of the big game, the Savage x Fenty founder released a 17-piece Super Bowl-inspired collection, which included a T-shirt that read: “Rihanna concert interrupted by a football game, weird but whatever” and her take on a classic football jersey.

The singer may have failed to debut any new music during her performance at Sunday’s Super Bowl, but the baby bump she debuted was enough to break the internet. Plus have you seen her Vogue cover? That woman has had quite the week.

Oh, also the Kansas City Chiefs won apparently.

S Club 7 are back!

We’ve seen a lot of bands reunite, from Take That to ABBA, but no reunion could be more iconic to the noughties babies than the return of S Club 7. With some even saying it’s exactly what the UK needs right now (and by some, we mean just us.) To celebrate the band’s 25th anniversary they will be touring the UK and Ireland, performing classic school disco bops such as Reach, Bring It All Back and Don’t Stop Movin’ (the last one is a particular banger).

It’s the first time all seven will be performing together since 2015, and although the promo pictures are giving more ad agency headshots than trendy pop band, we’re excited about the full 2000s experience that the tour will bring. We are getting our low slung jeans and ultra skinny scarves ready for their night out.

LGBTQ+ history brought to life at the Tower of London

This month is LGBTQIA+ History Month, a time that celebrates and gives visibility to decades of LGBTQ+ persistence and resistance. In honour of the month, a special event is hitting the Tower of London. Queer Lives is an after-hour tour that blends theatre and history as it explores the LGBTQ+ people who live, loved, and died at the historic landmark.

Hosted by a ‘raven’ tour guide, the performance will take visitors through a unique tour of the monument, detailing the forgotten history of figures such as King Edward II, whose closest political and emotional ally Piers Gaveston was also thought to be his lover, and King James I, who famously held multiple male favourites.

The tour is led by singer and actress Mzz Kimberley– aka Kim Tatum – the first trans woman to lead a theatrical performance at the Tower of London. The tour runs from 18-25 February and is not to be missed!

British Vogue x Snapchat Immersive Exhibition

British Vogue has teamed up with Snapchat for a one-of-a-kind immersive AR exhibition – Vogue x Snapchat: Redefining the Body. Curated by Vogue’s editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, the exhibition explores how AR can advance the realm of physical fashion and amplify and transform the everyday.

Each room showcases the collections of iconic designers: Dior, Kenneth Ize, Richard Quinn, Stella McCartney, Thebe Magugu, and Versace. They have been chosen as they’re considered leaders in reconfiguring notions of the body today, exploring race, gender, age, sexuality, and size. The exhibition demonstrates how these different interpretations of the physical form can be enhanced using Snapchat’s interactive AR lenses, which can animate, reflect, refract, and evolve the person or image in view.

Using clever AR tech, you can even try on some of the clothes to see yourself in designer outfits! Tickets are free and the exhibition runs until the 5th of March.
